World War II in AustriaThis Central European nation was invaded and annexed by Germany in March 1938. It was occupied, more or less willingly, for over five years. Patrols of the U.S. Seventh Army drove eastward through Austria in May 1945. By the end of the war, Austria had lost almost 400,000 soldiers and nearly 150,000 civilians.
